Buried VS Above Ground Tanks
Using buried fuel tanks, also known as underground storage tanks (USTs), offers several advantages over above-ground tanks.
USTs are buried below the ground, freeing up surface space for other uses such as parking, driveways, or additional structures. They are less visible, which can be beneficial in areas where aesthetics are important.
Being underground protects tanks from temperature fluctuations, UV exposure, and storm damage, reducing the risk of leaks and environmental contamination. They are less susceptible to fire hazards and vapor release, making them safer in certain operational contexts.
USTs are less accessible to vandals and thieves, reducing the risk of theft or tampering.
While they may be harder to inspect, USTs can last longer due to reduced exposure to weather and vandalism.
USTs are subject to strict regulations that help minimize environmental risks, though these regulations can also increase installation costs.
Despite these advantages, USTs are generally more expensive to install and maintain than above-ground tanks due to the need for excavation and specialized equipment. However, they offer significant benefits in terms of space utilization and environmental protection.
