Change Tractor Antifreeze This Way
Changing the antifreeze in a compact tractor is essential for protecting the engine from freezing and overheating.
Start by warming up the engine slightly to help the coolant drain more completely. Park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery for safety. Remove the radiator cap and place a drain pan beneath the radiator drain valve or petcock. Open the valve and allow the old antifreeze to fully drain.
Once drained, close the valve and flush the cooling system with distilled water to remove residual debris and old coolant. After flushing, drain the water completely. Prepare a fresh mix of antifreeze and distilled water in a 50/50 ratio unless your owner's manual directs otherwise. Slowly pour the new coolant into the radiator, filling it to the specified level on the overflow tank.
Replace the radiator cap and start the engine, allowing it to run and circulate the new antifreeze. Keep the heater on high to ensure the coolant circulates through the entire system. Check for leaks and monitor coolant levels, topping off as necessary. Proper disposal of old antifreeze is important to keep pets and wildlife safe, as it is toxic.
Regular antifreeze replacement, typically every two to three years, safeguards your tractor’s engine and cooling system, especially in harsh weather. Always consult your tractor’s manual for specific coolant types and quantities to maintain peak performance and prevent costly repairs.
