Late winter frosts can still bite, but a few simple steps will protect your flowers and help them bounce into spring. Watch your local forecast for nights at or below 32°F and pay attention to clear, calm nights, which are most likely to bring frost. Keep a simple thermometer in the garden so you learn how your own yard behaves. Low spots often freeze first.

To protect flowers, water the soil in the afternoon, not the leaves, because moist soil holds heat better overnight. Cover tender flowers in the evening with lightweight fabric like old sheets, frost cloth, or breathable row covers, never plastic directly on plants. Anchor covers with rocks or stakes so they don’t blow away, making sure the cover drapes all the way to the ground to trap rising heat, then remove them in the morning once it warms up so plants don’t overheat.

If plants get frost-nipped, don’t rush to prune right away. Wait a day or two to see what actually dies back, then trim off mushy or blackened growth so the plant can focus on healthy tissue. Give them a light feeding with a balanced fertilizer and keep them evenly watered to encourage new growth. Keep a small “frost kit” of covers and weights by the back door, and plant your most tender flowers near the house or fences where they get a bit of extra warmth, turning those last frosty nights into a minor hiccup instead of a major setback.
