To determine if your tractor axle needs to be replaced, look for specific signs.

Check for cracks, bends, or severe dents in the axle housing or axle tubes.  Any significant deformation is an indication of damage that likely warrants replacement.

Rock the wheels back and forth to check for excessive play in the axle bearings or king pins.  Significant looseness points to worn components that may require axle replacement.

If you notice gear oil or grease leaking from the axle seals, it could mean the seals are damaged and allowing contaminants in, leading to premature axle failure.

Listen for grinding, knocking, or clunking noises coming from the axle area when operating the tractor.  These abnormal sounds can signal internal axle damage or worn bearings.

If the tractor is hard to steer or the wheels don't track properly, it may be due to a bent or damaged axle.

Over time, the constant stress and weight on tractor axles can lead to metal fatigue and failure.  If your axle is very old or has extremely high hours of use, replacement may be prudent even without obvious damage.

If you notice any of these issues, it's advisable to have the axle inspected by a qualified mechanic.  They can properly diagnose the problem and recommend repair or full axle replacement as needed to ensure safe tractor operation.
