Draining Gas for Tractor Winter Storage
Properly draining gas from your compact tractor before winter storage helps prevent stale fuel, varnish buildup, and carburetor issues in the spring.
Safety First
Work in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames or sparks. Have a suitable fuel container ready to collect drained gasoline.
Draining the Fuel Tank
Locate the Fuel Line or Petcock: Most compact tractors have a fuel shutoff valve (petcock) or a removable fuel line at the bottom of the tank.
Disconnect the Fuel Line: Place your fuel container beneath the line or valve. Disconnect the line or open the petcock to allow gas to drain into the container.
If your tractor has a sediment bowl, remove and clean it as well.
Empty the Carburetor
Run the Engine: After draining the tank, reconnect the fuel line if needed. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls. This ensures any remaining fuel in the carburetor is used up.
Choke and Restart: Engage the choke and try to restart the engine a few times to draw out any last fuel from the carburetor bowl.
Dispose of Old Fuel Responsibly
Take the drained gasoline to a local hazardous waste facility or recycling center—never pour it on the ground or down a drain.
Additional Tips
Fuel Stabilizer Alternative: If you prefer not to drain the tank, you can fill it with fresh, ethanol-free gas and add a fuel stabilizer, then run the engine briefly to circulate the treated fuel. However, draining is the best option for gasoline tractors that will sit unused all winter.
Check Your Manual: Always consult your tractor’s owner’s manual for model-specific instructions and safety precautions.
This will help ensure your compact tractor is ready to run smoothly when spring arrives
