Opt for lightweight polycarbonate panels, which are more insulating and generally less expensive than glass. Placing your greenhouse against a south-facing wall helps use the wall's thermal mass for heating, saving on supplemental energy.

Focus on passive design, insulate the north wall, let in sun from the south, and allow natural airflow to reduce electricity use. Collect rainwater for watering and use soil rich in compost for natural fertility. Keeping the footprint small not only reduces cost, but further minimizes your greenhouse's energy and material needs. By planning ahead and sourcing secondhand or renewable materials locally, you can create a greenhouse that balances sustainability, affordability, and year-round productivity.
