Proper emergency lighting on tractors ensures safety and compliance with road regulations.

Core Lighting Requirements

Amber Warning Beacons: Tractors must have two flashing amber warning lights mounted at the same height and spaced apart. These beacons must emit a 360-degree visible signal and be positioned at least 1.2 meters above the ground.

Speed-Specific Lights: Tractors ≤25 mph: Headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals, and hazard warnings are mandatory. Tractors >25 mph: Additional rear-facing stop lights (activated during braking) are required. Rear and Front Lighting: Two red rear lamps and two white front lamps are mandatory for all tractors on public roads. A slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem must be displayed at the rear (3–5 feet above ground).

Additionally... Amber hazard lights (4-way flashers) are recommended for emergencies, such as breakdowns or low-visibility conditions. Trailers over 1.6 meters wide need front position lights, and those built post-1990 require indicators.

While federal guidelines provide a baseline, states may impose additional rules. For example, Texas mandates red rear reflectors and specifies taillamp height (15–72 inches). Always verify local regulations before operation.

Amber warning beacons, proper front/rear lighting, and speed-specific signals are critical for tractor safety. Compliance reduces accident risks and ensures legal road use.
