Fall Field Cleanup

Field cleanup in October sets the stage for healthy fields and productive planting next spring.

Clearing away spent crop debris and diseased plants reduces the chances of pathogens and pests overwintering and causing trouble during the next growing season.

Removing leftover produce, cutting back infected vegetation, and cleaning plant supports help break disease cycles and keep soils and structures in top shape.

After debris is removed, adding compost or manure boosts soil biology and maintains fertility through the winter. Some healthy, undecayed residue can be left on the field to shield the ground from harsh winter weather, but heavy or poorly distributed residue should be managed to avoid spring planting issues.

Now is also the time to consider planting cover crops, which protect against erosion, improve soil structure, and suppress weeds over the dormant months. Thoughtful October cleanup not only guards against disease but pays dividends in easier, healthier spring field preparation.
