How to Grow Cabbage
Cabbage is a hardy, cool-weather crop that thrives when planted in late summer or early fall for a crisp and flavorful harvest the following spring or early summer.
This timing allows cabbage plants to establish strong roots and grow steadily in cooler temperatures, making them more resistant to frost and pests. When planting, choose a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost or aged manure to support the cabbage’s steady growth.
Start cabbage seeds indoors about six to eight weeks before transplanting, or directly sow seeds in the garden if the climate is mild. Space the plants generously—about 12 to 24 inches apart—because cabbage heads need room to expand. As temperatures drop, the plants become “hardened,” increasing their frost tolerance.
Careful watering and occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer keep them healthy as they mature. Harvest time comes when the heads feel firm and solid, usually between 60 and 100 days after planting. With some patience, fall-planted cabbage rewards gardeners with fresh, nutritious heads ready to enjoy long before summer’s peak.
