Lettuce is a perfect cool-season crop to plant in late summer or early fall.

It thrives in the cooler temperatures and shorter days of fall, which slow its growth for sweeter, more tender leaves. For fall planting, start seeds indoors or directly sow them about 8 to 10 weeks before the first expected frost. Choose a sunny location with loose, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

Plant seeds shallowly, about a quarter-inch deep, and thin seedlings once they sprout to give each plant enough space to grow. Some lettuce varieties, especially loose-leaf types, handle fall weather better than others, offering a longer harvest window. Lettuce planted in fall often overwinter under mulch or frost protection, resuming growth quickly in early spring for an early and extended supply of crisp, vibrant greens. With attentive watering and protection from hard freezes, fall-planted lettuce is a rewarding choice for gardeners seeking fresh salads as soon as weather allows.
