How to Grow Swiss Chard

Swiss chard is a vibrant, nutritious leafy green.

Its colorful stems and tender leaves thrive in cooler temperatures, making it a perfect addition to cool-season gardens. For fall planting, sow seeds in rich, well-drained soil about half an inch deep, spacing them a few inches apart to allow room for growth.

Swiss chard grows quickly and is forgiving, tolerating light frosts and thriving in both full sun and partial shade. Regular watering and occasional feeding with compost or organic fertilizer keep the plants productive. Harvesting can begin as soon as leaves reach a usable size by picking the outer leaves and allowing the center to keep growing. Because Swiss chard is a cut-and-come-again plant, it continues producing fresh leaves through fall, winter (in mild climates), and early spring, providing healthy greens when many other vegetables are dormant.
