How to Hydrate Trees
Proper hydration is crucial for healthy, productive fruit trees.
1. Water Deeply, Not Frequently
Aim for deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow, frequent watering. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making trees more drought-resistant. For young trees, water 2–3 times per week with 3–5 gallons (11–19 liters) per session, adjusting for soil type and climate. Mature trees generally need about 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
2. Target the Drip Line
Water around the tree’s drip line—the area beneath the outer edge of the canopy—where the feeder roots absorb the most moisture. Avoid watering close to the trunk, as older roots near the trunk absorb little water and excess moisture can promote disease.
3. Adjust for Soil Type
Clay soils retain water longer, so water less often but deeply. Sandy soils drain quickly, requiring more frequent but lighter watering.
4. Use the Right Tools
Drip irrigation and soaker hoses are ideal as they deliver water slowly and directly to the root zone, reducing evaporation and runoff. Avoid sprinklers, which wet leaves and trunks, increasing the risk of fungal disease.
5. Check Soil Moisture
Ensure water penetrates at least 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) deep to reach the root zone. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
6. Mulch for Moisture Retention
Apply mulch around the drip line to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
