How to Install Flashing Tractor Amber Lights
Adding flashing amber warning lights improves tractor visibility and safety, especially on public roads.
Choose the Right Components
LED Amber Beacons: Opt for SAE/Class 1-certified lights (e.g., D&R Electronics BCN24) for compliance and durability.
Wiring: Use 18-gauge wire (or thicker for long runs) and LED-compatible flasher units, as traditional flashers won’t work with low-amperage LEDs.
Connectors: For newer tractors, use a standard seven-pin trailer plug. Older models may require custom wiring.
Mount the Beacon
Positioning: Install the beacon high for 360° visibility (e.g., on the cab roof). Fabricate a sturdy bracket if needed, as shown in the Kubota LX2610 installation.
Visibility: Ensure the beacon isn’t obstructed by implements like balers, which can block existing lights.
Wiring and Electrical Setup
Power Source: Connect the main power lead to the battery’s positive terminal, fused near the battery for safety.
Relay System: Use a four- or five-pin relay. Route power through the relay’s 30 pin, controlled by a switch connected to pins 86/85.
Fuse Panel: For integrated systems, connect to a dedicated 10-amp fuse circuit in the tractor’s fuse panel.
Implement Safety and Compliance
Trailer/Implement Lights: Attach red taillights and amber flashers to implements, wiring them to the tractor’s connector.
SMV Emblem: Pair lights with a slow-moving vehicle (SMV) sign for enhanced visibility.
Test and Adjust
Function Check: Verify all lights and flashers operate correctly. Adjust flash patterns if supported by the beacon.
Weatherproofing: Secure connections with heat-shrink tubing or electrical tape to prevent moisture damage.
Considerations...
Older Tractors: Build a custom circuit with relays, switches, and a fuse block if no factory wiring exists.
Local Regulations: Confirm compliance with state-specific lighting requirements (e.g., height, color).
By following these steps, you’ll enhance safety and meet legal standards for road use.
