Interpreting compression test results on tractor engines helps diagnose internal engine health.

First, compare your readings against manufacturer specifications from the service manual for your tractor model. Generally, cylinder compression should be consistent across all cylinders, with differences no greater than 10-15%. If one cylinder shows significantly lower pressure, it suggests valve leaks or head gasket failure. If the pressure is low but improves when a small amount of oil is added into the cylinder (wet test), it usually indicates worn or damaged piston rings. If adding oil does not improve compression, valves or head gaskets are likely the problem.

Overall low compression on all cylinders can point to timing issues or widespread engine wear. Abnormally high compression readings may indicate carbon buildup inside combustion chambers. If a cylinder shows no compression at all, this often indicates severe damage such as a broken valve or piston.

Always ensure tests are repeated for accuracy and done with cold engines with spark plugs (or injectors in diesels) removed to reduce cranking load. Compression testing gives a good initial picture of engine condition, helping prioritize repairs or rebuilds. For best results, refer to your tractor’s manuals or seek professional advice when uncertain. Early diagnosis helps maintain performance and extend your tractor’s service life.
