Planting a tree involves several steps to ensure it grows healthily and thrives.

Select a spot with appropriate light conditions for the tree species (full sun, part shade).  Ensure there is enough space for the tree to reach its mature height without obstructing structures or walkways.

Take off any tags or twine from the tree.  Trim any broken branches and address double leaders by pruning one of the main stems.  If the tree is containerized, check for circling roots and straighten or prune them as needed.

Dig a hole that is two to three times wider than the root ball but only as deep as the root ball.  Use a nursery spade to loosen the soil and a shovel to remove it.

Place the tree in the hole so the root flare (where the trunk flares out at the base) is level with the ground.  Gently firm a shallow ring of soil around the base of the root ball for stability.

Fill the hole with soil, gently tamping it down to eliminate air pockets.  Water periodically during backfilling.  Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.

If the tree needs support, stake it using a stake pounder and ties.  Place ties about 4 feet from the ground.

Apply a layer of mulch around the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.

By following these steps, you can ensure your tree is planted correctly and has a strong foundation for growth.
