October is an ideal time to plant the hardy butterfly bush, known for attracting pollinators and adding vibrant color to the garden.

When planting this bush, select a location that offers full sun and well-draining soil, as butterfly bushes prefer warmth and don’t tolerate soggy roots. Start by digging a hole slightly wider than the root ball, making sure the planting depth matches the bush’s original soil line. Before placing the bush, gently tease out any circling roots to encourage healthy growth. Once planted, water the bush thoroughly to settle the soil and help the roots establish before winter. Adding a layer of mulch around the base helps protect the roots from early frosts while retaining moisture. Although the butterfly bush will focus on root development through the colder months, it will reward gardeners with an abundant bloom season in the following summer.
