Tractor GPS systems use satellite signals to locate the tractor and provide real-time movement data, such as speed, direction, and location.  A few of the various applications of this technology include field mapping, tractor navigation along straight or curved routes, equipment and application management, and yield monitoring.  With GPS for tractor, farmers may increase yields, optimize inputs, reduce overlaps, eliminate skips, and save expenses.  Production and profitability rise as a result.  More precision, reduced operator fatigue, greater production, and little environmental impact are all benefits of tractor GPS technology.

GPS equipment manufacturers have developed several tools to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient in their precision farming activities.  Location information is collected by GPS receivers for mapping field boundaries, roads, irrigation systems, and problem areas in crops such as weeds or disease.  The accuracy of GPS allows farmers to create farm maps with precise acreage for field areas, road locations, and distances between points of interest.  GPS allows farmers to accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or monitor crop conditions.

The RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) system in agriculture works by transmitting a signal from the GPS satellite to the base, which processes it.  Then, the signal (with the RTK corrections) is transmitted to the tractor, which uses it to navigate with high precision.  The RTK system provides benefits such as fuel cost reduction, increased efficiency, repeatability, and reduction of human error.

NASA has developed GPS correction technology that allows tractors to drive themselves.  The technology, called RTKX, relies on the low drift of the corrected GPS signal to extend RTK-quality accuracy for up to 15 minutes whenever the RTK radio link is lost.

GPS technology has several applications in precision farming, including mapping the boundaries of fields, calculating the area they cover, providing “markers” for representative soil sampling, recording drainage, and more.
