Yanmar’s history is a story of innovation in compact diesel engines and agricultural machinery, beginning in Japan over a century ago.

Yanmar was founded in Osaka, Japan, in 1912 by Magokichi Yamaoka, who aimed to ease the burden for small farmers through reliable, efficient engines. The company introduced Japan’s first oil-powered agricultural engine in 1920, rapidly improving its designs to make compact, high-performance diesel engines by 1933—the world’s first practical small-size diesel engine, the HB model.

After decades of refining engine technology, Yanmar launched its first tractor, the YM273, in 1967. Focused on compact designs, Yanmar tractors brought water-cooled diesel power in a size suitable for smaller farms and specialty operators. By the late 1970s, Yanmar expanded into global export markets, including the U.S., with tractors tailored for local needs and safety standards.

Yanmar’s reputation for durability helped secure partnerships, powering not just its own tractors but engines for John Deere and others. Technological advances continued with innovations like small horizontal water-cooled diesel engines, hydromechanical transmissions, and programmable controls for modern compacts. Today, Yanmar tractors are recognized worldwide for product quality and are supported by advanced training and demonstration centers in North America.

Yanmar’s history proves its lasting influence in the evolution of compact tractors and agricultural machinery.
