Laundering Clothing From Pesticides
To safely decontaminate and launder pesticide-contaminated PPE, you must follow rigorous procedures to protect yourself and prevent cross-contamination.
Check product labels first. The pesticide label provides specific instructions on whether contaminated clothing can be laundered and the recommended process.
Handle with gloves. Always wear chemical-resistant gloves when handling contaminated PPE or clothing to prevent direct skin exposure.
Shake off residues outdoors. Shake, brush, or dust off dry material (especially from cuffs, hems, and pockets) outdoors before removing PPE.
Change outside living areas. Remove contaminated clothing outside the home or in a designated area that is easy to decontaminate.
Store separately. Place the clothing in a sealed and clearly marked container until laundering. Keep away from household laundry.
Pre-rinse or soak. Use a pre-rinse or soak for contaminated clothing before running the main wash cycle.
Launder separately using hot water. Use the highest water level, hottest water temperature (140–160°F), and longest wash cycle possible. Add heavy-duty detergent and only wash a few items at a time for maximum agitation.
Run an extra rinse cycle. Use at least two rinses for moderately/heavily contaminated items.
Air dry outdoors. Dry laundered PPE outside in the sun when possible, as sunlight helps break down residual chemicals. Avoid using household dryers unless dedicated to PPE only.
Clean washing machine after use. After laundering, run the appliance empty using detergent and hot water to remove any remaining pesticide residues before washing other clothes.
Inspect PPE for damage. Dispose of items that are heavily contaminated or show signs of degradation; do not try to salvage these by repeated washing.
Proper laundering and decontamination of PPE minimizes health risks for pesticide applicators and their families, ensuring that harmful residues do no remain on clothing or equipment.
