Lubricating your compact tractor’s PTO is essential to keep the shaft and its components operating smoothly and to avoid premature wear.

Begin by locating the grease fittings on the PTO shaft, often found on the universal joints and shaft bearings. Before applying new lubricant, clean off any dirt, old grease, or debris from the shaft and fittings using a rag or compressed air to prevent contamination.

Using a grease gun loaded with the manufacturer-recommended grease, apply lubricant to each fitting. Pump the grease until you see fresh lubricant oozing out slightly from the joints or bearings, signaling that the internal components are fully lubricated. Be cautious not to over-grease as excessive pressure can damage seals or cause grease to leak.

Regular lubrication intervals typically fall around every 50 to 100 hours of operation, but check your tractor’s manual for specific recommendations. After lubrication, inspect the PTO shaft for any signs of wear, rust, or damage, and keep the protective guards in place for safety. Proper PTO lubrication reduces friction, prevents overheating, and extends the life of your PTO system, ensuring reliable power transfer to your implements for years to come.
