Operating a Tractor On Slippery Terrain

Operating a tractor on wet or slippery terrain can be dangerous if proper safety guidelines are not followed.

Here are some safety guidelines for operating a tractor on wet or slippery terrain:

• Reduce speed when turning, crossing slopes, or on rough/slick/muddy surfaces.
• Stay off slopes too steep for safe operation.
• Ensure an approved cab or roll-over protective structure (ROPS) is installed.
• Keep all guards in place, including power take-off and master shield guards.
• Use a protective PTO shaft cover and PTO shield.
• Firmly attach the seat belt.
• Always start and stop the tractor slowly.
• Drive slowly and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
• Test the brakes each time the tractor is put into motion after start-up.
• Keep children away from tractors and machinery.
• Use posture designed seat, manual over-ride power steering, and maximum visibility.
• Use hazard warning decals, hydraulic power for heavy lifting, and three-point hitch to prevent back-flipping.
• Use rear tail and work lights, mudguards, and side light.
• Do not permit others to ride.
• Reverse the tires on 4WD tractors to help with traction braking on the front axle.
• Always drive straight down steep hills.
• Do not drive diagonally across and down slopes.
• Select a low gear before driving down and apply the throttle to reduce the chance of the engine stalling.
• Engage ‘diff lock’ before starting a hill descent for maximum braking and to prevent single-wheel lockup.
• If stability becomes uncertain, turn downhill to prevent a rear rollover.
• Stay as far away from the embankment as the ditch is deep to avoid rolling into the ditch.
• Back up if the tractor gets stuck in mud or ice to keep the front end down and reduce the risk of rollover.

It is important to read the manufacturer's operating instructions and complete the necessary specialist training before driving a tractor for the first time.

Refreshing your knowledge is also important if it has been a while since you have driven a tractor.  Additionally, it is best for new drivers to get behind-the-wheel instruction by an expert operator.
