Planting and Growing a Lilac Bush
A great bush to plant in October is the lilac, since the cool autumn weather gives its roots time to establish before winter.
Planting a lilac bush starts with choosing a sunny, well-drained spot, as these shrubs thrive on full light and airflow. Begin by digging a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than its height to ensure the base of the plant sits level with the surrounding soil. Gently loosen the roots before setting the bush into the hole, then backfill with native soil, firming it in carefully to avoid air pockets.
A healthy lilac will appreciate a deep watering after planting and a layer of mulch to regulate soil temperature through the winter. While it may not bloom the following spring, planting in October sets the stage for stronger growth and beautiful blossoms in the years to come.
