Preparing Farms for Winter

October marks a critical transition on the farm, as the growing season wraps up and preparations for winter take center stage.

Harvesting the last of summer and early fall crops is a top priority, ensuring pumpkins, late tomatoes, squash, and root vegetables get gathered before the first frost hits. This is also the perfect window to plant hardy crops like garlic or winter onions, giving them a head start for next year’s harvest. Once fields are cleared, adding compost or manure boosts soil health and provides nutrients ready to break down through the winter months.

Installing cover crops, such as rye or clover, is a proactive step that helps prevent erosion, enhances the soil structure, and suppresses weeds until spring. Across the farm, livestock care intensifies: pens and barns are insulated, feed stockpiled, and watering systems are winterized to reduce trouble when temperatures drop. Completing these October chores not only protects yields and animals through the cold but also sets the farm up for a strong start next spring.
