Working long hours outdoors in cold weather, especially when operating a tractor, can put operators at risk for frostbite.

Frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze due to prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, causing pain, numbness, and potential long-term damage.

To prevent frostbite ---

  • Dress in Layers: Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and a waterproof, windproof outer layer. Cover all exposed skin including fingers, ears, and face with gloves, hats, and face masks.
  • Use Heated Gear: Invest in heated gloves, insoles, or seat cushions to keep extremities warm inside the tractor cab or when working outside.
  • Take Frequent Breaks: Step inside to warm up every hour or so and check fingers, toes, and face for early frostbite signs like numbness or tingling.
  • Stay Dry: Wet clothing increases heat loss; change any damp clothing immediately to lower frostbite risk.
  • Maintain Cab Heating: Keep cab heaters in good working order to provide a warm refuge during long tractor sessions and reduce cold exposure.

By dressing appropriately, using warm gear, and taking regular breaks, tractor operators can safeguard themselves against frostbite and safely extend their productivity during winter.
