Space heaters can provide essential warmth for farm buildings and livestock during cold months, but they must be used with great care to prevent fire hazards.

On farms, temporary electric space heaters are common but not always suited for damp, corrosive barn environments where moisture can degrade electrical components and increase risk.

It’s crucial to place heaters on non-combustible surfaces, keeping them at least three feet away from flammable materials like bedding, hay, and wood. Hardwiring heaters instead of using plug-and-cord setups reduces overheating dangers caused by corrosion, and all electrical connections should be inspected regularly for damage. Certified heaters with automatic shut-off features if tipped over add an extra layer of safety.

Never leave space heaters unattended, avoid altering them, and never plug them into extension cords or power strips. These precautions help protect livestock, equipment, and structures while providing reliable heat through cold weather on farms.
