Tariffs and Agricultural Exports

Retaliatory tariffs are slashing U.S. agricultural exports, with China’s 34% levy on soybeans, pork, and grains threatening $26 billion in annual sales. Canada and Mexico have also imposed duties, further shrinking markets. Soybean exports to China—already weakened by Brazil’s dominance—face total tariffs up to 71.5%, while pork tariffs could hit 99%.

Farmers, already battling a three-year income slump, now grapple with soaring costs. Fertilizer prices doubled due to Canadian potash tariffs, and tractor prices rose 50% since 2020. “Retaliatory tariffs threaten farmers’ survival,” warns American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall, as Brazil and Latin America gain export ground.

Without swift policy fixes, the U.S. risks permanent market losses and rural economic collapse.
