Tire System Winter Maintenance Explained
Winter Tire System Maintenance to Prepare Your Compact Tractor for Spring
Your compact tractor’s tires take a beating year-round, but winter is the perfect time to give them some attention. Proper tire maintenance not only improves traction and ride quality, it also prevents costly wear and ensures your tractor is ready to roll when spring workload ramps up.
Cold weather causes air pressure to drop, often leading to under-inflated tires. Low PSI reduces traction, increases fuel use, and accelerates wear. Check pressures regularly during winter and inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
Winter is the ideal time to look for cracks, dry rot, punctures, or uneven wear. If you spot damaged tires, replacing them before spring prevents blowouts and downtime during critical work periods.
If your tractor uses fluid-filled tires for ballast, check levels and inspect valve stems for leaks. This is also a good time to consider switching to a winter-safe antifreeze mix (like beet juice or calcium chloride) to prevent freezing.
Seasonal temperature changes and heavy fall use can loosen wheel hardware. Verify torque settings so wheels stay secure when spring tasks begin.
Removing mud, salt, and debris prevents corrosion and helps you spot developing issues earlier. Clean rims also ensure a proper seal and reduce slow leaks.
With these simple winter tire maintenance steps, your compact tractor will have better traction, safer performance, and longer-lasting tires.
