Tractor sales in 2026 are soft overall, but the story is different by segment and creates some real opportunities for farmers.

Industry data shows total ag tractor sales in the U.S. are trending down this year, with dealers expecting around a 10% year-over-year drop in new equipment sales as farmers pull back on big purchases in a tight farm economy. Larger row-crop and 4WD tractors have cooled the most, with slower demand and more aging inventory putting pressure on prices, while compact and utility tractors remain relatively more resilient, supported by small farms, acreage owners, and rural lifestyle buyers.

At the same time, used equipment remains a bright spot. Inventory of late-model, low-hour tractors is tighter, and clean machines are still in strong demand even as overall sales volumes soften. For farmers, this means 2026 looks like a buyer’s market for some new and higher-horsepower models, but a competitive market for well-kept used tractors that hold their value.
