Understanding Tractor Brake Types
The types of brakes used in compact tractors include mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes, as well as air brakes, drum brakes, and wet disc brakes.
Mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes are commonly used in compact tractors, where a caliper with hydraulic fluid squeezes friction pads against the disc to slow the wheel.
Drum brakes, on the other hand, use a piston with hydraulic fluid to force friction shoe pads outward against the drum walls.
Air brakes can also be used in tractors, and they can be of the drum, disc, or a combination type, with air pressure providing the power instead of hydraulic fluid.
Additionally, wet disc brakes, which use multiple discs positioned in oil or transmission fluid for stopping, are suitable for heavy farm tractors operating in difficult conditions.
