Properly storing and caring for horses during cold weather is essential to keep them healthy and comfortable throughout winter.

One of the first steps is ensuring the barn or shelter is well-prepared: inspect for repairs, seal drafts, yet maintain good ventilation to prevent respiratory issues caused by ammonia buildup and moisture. Horses naturally grow thick winter coats that insulate them against the cold, so many healthy horses don’t require blanketing unless they are older, underweight, clipped, or have special needs.

Access to fresh, unfrozen water is critical. Heated buckets or water trough heaters help maintain hydration, which supports digestion and body heat regulation. Ample high-quality hay should be stocked to meet increased energy needs, as horses burn more calories to stay warm.

Bedding should be dry and plentiful to provide insulation and comfort. Regular monitoring for changes in weight and condition allows early detection of health issues. With proper shelter, nutrition, and hydration, horses can thrive even in harsh winter conditions.
