Winter Salt Safe for Animals
Winter salts used to melt ice and snow on farms must be chosen carefully to avoid harm to livestock and other animals.
Traditional rock salt (sodium chloride) is widely used because it is affordable and effective, but it can be harsh on animals, causing paw irritation, digestive upset if ingested, and damage to hooves or coats. It also negatively affects soil, plants, concrete, and metal structures.
Safer alternatives include calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) and magnesium chloride. CMA is biodegradable, less corrosive, and less irritating to animals, making it a good choice near barns and animal areas. Magnesium chloride releases heat slowly and works well in very cold temperatures but can still irritate skin or cause gastrointestinal upset in large amounts. Urea-based melts are another pet-safer option, though they may still cause mild digestive issues if ingested.
Natural mineral salts like Nature’s Blend provide effective ice melting while nourishing soil and posing minimal risk to animals when used properly. Using these safer winter salts and applying them judiciously helps maintain animal health and farm sustainability during harsh winters.
