PTO Safety Checklist

Pre-Operational Inspection...

• Ensure all PTO guards and shields are securely in place and undamaged.
• Inspect the tractor’s “U” guard and machine “O” guard for correct fitment.
• Check that safety chains are properly attached to both ends of the PTO guard.
• Spin driveline guards to confirm they are freely rotating and not stuck to the shaft.
• Look for warning labels or decals; ensure they are clean and clearly visible.
• Confirm the PTO shaft is properly locked onto the tractor’s PTO stub.

Operational Safety...

• Only wear snug-fitting clothing and tie back long hair.
• Maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet from the PTO shaft during operation.
• Never step over or reach across a rotating PTO shaft; always walk around it.
• Do not allow children or bystanders near PTO-driven equipment.
• Place safety pylons or markings when PTO-driven equipment is running.

Shutdown and Maintenance Checks...

• Disengage the PTO and turn off the engine before dismounting, making adjustments, or clearing blockages.
• Inspect all PTO and driveline parts for wear or damage after each use.
• Lubricate PTO bearings and driveline components as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Remove damaged or faulty equipment from service and tag it for repair.

Record-Keeping and Training...

• Document all inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
• Train all employees and operators on PTO safety procedures and correct use of guards.
