Zerk System Winter Maintenance Explained
Winter Zerk System Maintenance to Get Your Compact Tractor Ready for Spring
Your compact tractor relies on dozens of grease fittings (often called zerks) to keep moving parts protected from friction, wear, and corrosion. Winter is the perfect time to service these points so your tractor runs smoothly and reliably when spring work begins.
Grease All Loader, Steering, and Hitch Zerks
Grease breaks down over time, especially in cold or wet conditions. Apply fresh, high-quality grease to all fittings on the front loader, steering components, and 3-point hitch. This prevents early wear and ensures smooth movement when spring workloads increase.
Inspect Fittings for Damage or Blockages
Cold weather can cause hardened grease to clog fittings. Check for plugged, bent, or missing zerks. Replace any that won’t take grease to avoid dry joints or premature failure.
Wipe Away Dirt and Old Grease
Dirt around fittings can get pushed into joints during greasing, reducing their lifespan. Clean each zerk before and after greasing to keep contaminants out and extend component life.
Check Pivot Points and Pins
While greasing, inspect pivot pins, bushings, and joints for excessive play or wear. Winter is the best time to replace worn parts before the busy spring season.
Use the Right Grease for the Season
Cold temperatures can thicken low-quality grease. Use a premium all-season or winter-grade grease to ensure proper flow and protection during winter service.
A thorough winter greasing routine keeps your compact tractor’s moving parts protected, responsive, and ready for the heavy demands of spring.
