Radishes are one of the quickest and easiest vegetables to grow.

They thrive in cool weather, which helps keep their flavor mild and prevents them from becoming woody or bitter. To grow radishes for a fall or early spring harvest, sow seeds directly into loose, well-drained soil about half an inch deep and space them one to two inches apart.

Because radishes grow rapidly, many can be harvested in just 3 to 4 weeks. For a continuous supply, plant radishes in succession every two weeks while temperatures remain cool. Fall is an ideal time to plant radishes, as cooler temperatures slow their growth just enough to develop sweet, tender roots. They tolerate light frosts well and can even remain in the ground into winter with some protection. Whether enjoyed fresh from the garden or stored in a cool spot, radishes add a peppery crunch to salads and meals throughout the cooler months.
