To ensure your tractor meets all safety standards before use, you must follow some essential steps.

Conduct a Pre-Operation Safety Check

Walk around the tractor and attached implements to check for obstacles, leaks, or visible damage. Inspect the area for hazards under or near the machine.

Inspect Critical Systems and Features:

  • Check fluid levels (engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluids).
  • Ensure tires are properly inflated and free of major cuts or cracks.
  • Test brakes for proper adjustment and function, making sure left and right brakes can be locked together for highway travel.
  • Verify that all lights, flashers, and signals are working and clean.
  • Confirm the presence and integrity of safety features like roll-over protective structures (ROPS), seat belts, PTO guards, and SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) emblems.
  • Ensure a fire extinguisher is securely fastened inside the cab or operator’s station.

Follow Manufacturer’s Maintenance Schedule

Regularly service the engine, transmission, brakes, and other components as recommended by the manufacturer to prevent equipment failure.

Review Operating Procedures and Safety Decals

Make sure all safety decals are visible and not damaged. Review proper operating procedures, including safe speeds, use of seat belts, and ROPS.

Operator Training

Ensure all operators are trained in safe tractor operation, including the use of safety equipment and recognition of workplace hazards.

Keep the Tractor Clean

Remove mud, oil, and debris from steps and the cab to prevent slips and fire hazards.

Check for Compliance with Legal Standards

Tractors manufactured after October 26, 1976, must have ROPS by law, and seat belts must be worn when ROPS are present. If operating on public roads, ensure all lighting and signage meet state vehicle codes.

By systematically inspecting your tractor and following these best practices, you can ensure it meets all safety standards and operates reliably and safely in the field.
