There are the steps you need to follow to test your tractor battery.

  • Access the battery by lifting the seat on the tractor.
  • Set a digital multimeter to measure DC voltage, and set the range to at least 13V for a 12V battery.
  • Grasp the multimeter probes above the finger guards and place the red lead on the positive (+) battery terminal and the black lead on the negative (-) terminal.
  • Read the voltage displayed on the multimeter.  A healthy 12V battery should read around 12.7V or higher.  A reading below 10.5V indicates the battery has a dead cell and needs to be replaced.  If the battery reads 12V or more, it is still good and does not need to be replaced.  For 24V or 36V rechargeable batteries, check the label to determine the voltage and set the multimeter accordingly.
  • If the battery tests low, try charging it for an additional hour and retest. If it still reads low, the battery needs to be replaced,

The key steps are to access the battery, use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage at the terminals, and compare the reading to the specifications for a healthy battery.  This will indicate if the battery needs to be replaced or recharged.
