If your tractor is leaking oil, there are several possible reasons why this is happening.

Here are some steps you can take to identify and fix the problem:

  • Check for a damaged gasket:  If you notice oil leaking from a gasket, it will need to be replaced.  For example, if your tractor has a damaged valve cover gasket, you can remove the bolts holding the valve cover in place, clean both surface areas with parts cleaner and a soft brush, and re-install the new valve cover gasket.
  • Identify the source of the leak:  If you're not sure where the oil is coming from, you can try washing everything down with a degreaser and water, then allow it to dry or blow off.  This can help you find the source of the leak.
  • Check the oil level:  If you find the engine overfilled, drain oil to the full mark on the dipstick.  A leaking head gasket or sump gasket can also cause oil leaks.
  • Check the transmission seal:  If oil is dripping from a hole in the bottom of the clutch casing, it could be coming from the transmission.  The transmission seal is not hard to replace, but you do have to split the tractor in just in front.
  • Check the vent assembly:  Tractors that are working units are sure to collect dirt and build-up around the vent assembly.  If the vent is plugged either from dirt build-up, it can cause oil leaks.

Once you have identified the source of the leak, you can take steps to fix the problem.  If you are not comfortable doing the repairs yourself, it is best to take your tractor to a professional mechanic.
