Testing Your Tractors Coolant
You must consistently test your tractor coolant’s effectiveness.
Check Freeze Protection with a Refractometer or Hydrometer
A refractometer is the most accurate tool for measuring the concentration of antifreeze in your coolant. Place a few drops of coolant on the instrument, look through the eyepiece, and read the scale to determine the freeze point. This tells you if your coolant mix will protect against winter temperatures.
A hydrometer can also be used. It measures freeze protection by indicating where floating balls or a pointer settle on a scale, showing the temperature range your coolant can handle.
Test Additive Levels with Coolant Test Strips
Dip test strips (available from tractor dealers) into the coolant. Compare the color change to a chart to check if corrosion inhibitors or supplemental coolant additives are still effective. This helps prevent rust and liner pitting in your engine.
Check for Electrical Conductivity with a Multimeter
Place one probe in the coolant and the other to a ground. If the voltage reading exceeds about 0.3 volts, it indicates excessive conductivity, which can lead to corrosion. If your reading is at or above this threshold, consider changing the coolant.
Inspect Coolant Appearance
Coolant should be clear and brightly colored. If it looks rusty, cloudy, or has debris, it’s time to flush and replace it.
Always test coolant at least once a year, and before winter. Replace coolant if it fails any of these tests or as recommended in your tractor’s manual.
