Bias Ply VS Radial Tractor Tires
Choosing the right tractor tire can make a big difference in your farm’s efficiency and soil health. The two main types—bias ply and radial—each have unique strengths.
Here’s what you need to know...
Bias Ply Tires
Layers of fabric crisscross diagonally, connecting the tread and sidewall. Tough sidewalls resist cuts and punctures; ideal for rough terrain and hillside work. Harsher ride, more soil compaction, and shorter tread life.
Radial Tires
Plies run perpendicular to the direction of travel, with belts under the tread. Sidewall and tread flex independently. Smoother ride, longer tread life, bigger footprint for better traction, and less soil compaction. Higher upfront cost; sidewalls can be more vulnerable to damage.
Which Should You Choose?
Radial tires are best for modern tractors, fieldwork, and anyone looking to boost productivity and protect soil. Bias ply tires are a solid choice for older tractors, utility work, and rough terrain—especially if you’re on a budget.
For most farms, radials pay off in the long run, but bias ply tires still have their place for tough jobs and tight budgets.
