For poultry, fall is ideal for acquiring chickens or ducks that will spend the winter growing stronger, ready to lay eggs or provide meat in spring.

Fall is also a good season to buy sheep and goats, giving them time to adjust to new pastures and handlers before colder weather. For cattle, purchasing in fall can be advantageous as markets often offer better prices after summer, and animals can gain weight in fall pastures or barn-housed feed before winter.

Horses purchased in fall benefit from gentle introduction before harsh winter training or work begins. Early acquisition in fall allows sufficient time for vaccinations, deworming, and monitoring before temperatures drop, ensuring healthier, less stressed animals adapted to their new homes by winter’s arrival.
