Refractometer Analysis Made Simple
A refractometer is considered a quick, easy, and accurate tool for testing coolant concentration, including antifreeze mixtures, in tractors and other equipment.
When properly calibrated and maintained, refractometers provide reliable readings of coolant freeze point and concentration, often outperforming hydrometers in precision.
Always calibrate with distilled water or a standard solution before use, ideally at room temperature. Many refractometers feature automatic temperature compensation (ATC) to further improve accuracy. Ensure the coolant sample is free from air bubbles, debris, or oil contamination, as these can distort readings.
Different coolants have different refractometer indices (RI). Always use the correct conversion factor for your specific coolant, as listed on the product’s technical data sheet.
Regularly clean and check the prism for scratches or residue, which can affect accuracy.
While refractometers accurately measure concentration and freeze point, they do not indicate coolant age or additive depletion—so follow service intervals even if readings appear correct.
When used and maintained correctly, a refractometer provides highly accurate coolant analysis for concentration and freeze protection, especially when compared to other field methods.
Always follow calibration and usage guidelines for best results.
