There are several types of spark plugs used in tractors, each with distinct materials and performance characteristics.
Copper Spark Plugs
These are the most common and affordable option. Copper plugs have a nickel-alloy outer layer, which wears down relatively quickly under high heat and pressure, resulting in a shorter lifespan compared to other types. They are best for older or standard engines where frequent replacement is not a concern.
Platinum Spark Plugs
Featuring a platinum tip, these plugs last longer than copper due to platinum’s higher melting point and hardness. They maintain a sharp edge and handle heat better, making them suitable for modern engines. Platinum plugs are available as single or double platinum, with double platinum offering even greater durability.
Iridium Spark Plugs
Iridium is stronger and has a higher melting point than platinum, giving these plugs the longest lifespan and best performance. Their thin center electrode improves firing efficiency and conductivity, making them ideal for high-performance or newer tractor engines.

Multiple Ground Electrode Spark Plugs
Some plugs feature more than one ground electrode, distributing wear and extending service life by allowing the spark to jump to the least worn electrode.
Brands and Compatibility
Leading brands include NGK, Champion (notably models like RC12YC and RJ19LM), Bosch, Autolite, and ACDelco. Always ensure the spark plug matches your tractor’s specifications for size, heat range, and thread type to avoid performance problems or engine damage.
